What is Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)?

Strabismus, also known as crossed or turned eyes, is a visual condition characterized by the misalignment of the eyes. In individuals with strabismus, the eyes do not properly align and point in the same direction. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward while the other eye focuses straight ahead.

This misalignment can be constant or intermittent, and it may affect one or both eyes. Strabismus typically develops during childhood but can also occur in adults due to various reasons such as eye muscle imbalance, problems with the nerves controlling eye movement, or certain health conditions.

Strabismus can lead to vision problems, including reduced depth perception and binocular vision. If left untreated, it can also cause a condition called amblyopia, or lazy eye, where the brain starts ignoring the signals from the misaligned eye, eventually leading to permanent blindness.

Treatment for strabismus aims to realign the eyes and improve vision. It can involve the use of corrective lenses or eye exercises.
