Pterygium

What is Pterygium?

Pterygium, also known as "surfer's eye," is a common eye condition characterized by the growth of a fleshy, non-cancerous tissue on the conjunctiva.

The conjunctiva is a thin, clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye (sclera) and lines the inside of the eyelids.

Pterygium usually develops on the side of the eye closer to the nose and can gradually progress over time.

It often starts as a small, yellowish bump and may eventually grow larger, extending onto the cornea. While the exact cause of pterygium is not fully understood, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, dry and dusty environments, and chronic eye irritation are considered contributing factors.
